Main Idea: The North and South had many different strengths, strategies, and purposes in the Civil War.

Border States
- The boarder states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri we bitterly divided over the civil war; slavery was legal but none had many enslaved people
- Abraham Lincoln struggled to keep the four boarder states within the Union

Americans Against Americans
Main Idea: Soldiers in the Civil War came from every region, and each side expected an early victory.
- When the war began each side expected an easy victory
- Northerners could not imagine the Confederates holding out for long against the Union's great resources
- Confederates believed the North could never subdue the fighting spirit of the South
- In the end the war lasted far longer than most Americans could have ever guessed
